What's Happenin' [03.20.17]

Reflections and projections.

It's 2017. A new year, a new world. I have to say, I miss 2016 a little. A year full of excitement and energy. I admit, I had high hopes of an amazing shift forward in our country. I felt re-awakened by idealism. Compassion and truth seemeed to be making waves. Alas, the year unfolded another way, so unexpected. Not that we wouldn't always want to be a bit on guard anyway, but I feel like now we really need to be on guard. So much is being undone and rewired, and not in a good way, in my opinion. It's time to lean in, not sit back, represent. I've been trying to figure out how, and what my role could be. Dare I say, it's a scary time in many ways. But I'm trying to hold onto some of that 2016 excitement and energy. I wanna build on that. It felt meaningful and good.

Moving on from the state of world and country, I feel thankful to be surrounded by so many great people. My universe continues to inspire, push creativity, and stay focused on those good vibrations we are all constantly reaching for. The ALO community is relentless in this realm. It's really unbelievable, how much positivity you throw our way in order for us to, in our best moments, take it, transform it, and turn it right back into something collaborative and special. We had a great New Year's party in Santa Barabra, our home away from home. And our 11th annual Tour d'Amour just wrapped up and I have to say, I feel humbled and lucky to get to do what we do. We're still working on our year's calendar, but stay tuned for more good fun and growth ahead.

And the love-fest rolls right over to my Nicki Bluhm & The Gramblers camp as well. We had a great 2016, full of new adventures, and already a few good ones this year as well. We're talking a little down time this Spring/Summer to make a new stew, but our heads are in it and I'm confident we'll emerge with something fresh and epic in good time. The band is family and there's something truly untouchable that happens when we come together and catch the wind. I can't wait for what awaits this band.

What else... I'm still enjoying life in Oakland, scooting over to Phil Lesh's Terrapin Crossroads for fun (and typically very spontaneous) collaborations with the Bay Area's best jammers. My old band pals in Big Light are also looking ahead to some fresh entanglements this year. I'm excited to hook back up with the always creative and kind Jack Johnson on some Summer dates with ALO. And I'll also be in New Orleans with Lebo and new friend Emily Clark for the second weekend of Jazzfest. Keeping my head up, looking for collaborations that make me haopy and, if all goes well, returning some of those good vibes back into the world. That's what life's all about anyway, right?

Dear diary, till next time. Be well, Steve
